The second part of Borderline, a PACT research project dealing with the latest practices and concepts at the intersection of art and the economy, has given rise to a film installation entitled “The Choreography of Organisation”.
In the film, cultural scientist Eva Kiefer and scenographer Katleen Arthen explore the fundamental principles of dance — space, movement, and rhythm — within the industrial production methods of companies based in and around Essen (Ruhr District).
Two films presented in parallel focus on the flow of machine movements in space, such as steel boilers or hydraulic rollers. Through exact correspondence, they create an aesthetic form — a choreographed dance. The sound collage comprises machine sounds and classical music (Bach and Schumann), but the audible noise of the machines does not directly correlate to the visible machines and gestures.
PACT Zollverein – Performing Arts NRW is a renowned art space that was formerly a coal mine and is now an international venue for dance and choreography.
